Give yourself the Gift of Healthy Living This Christmas

A few tips for healthy living this Christmas and during the holiday season

Christmas is the season for family and many traditions. Christmas dinner, opening gifts on Christmas Eve (one in my family), Cheesy Christmas movies, and waking up early on Christmas morning to see what Santa brought us. Our schedule is simply too full of social engagements, marathon cooking and baking sessions, and last-minute gift shopping to even think about ourselves. With such a happy maelstrom, it can be easy to forget about ourselves completely; unfortunately, few of us can afford to put our health on hold for a month as we stuff ourselves full of the excesses of Christmas dinners. While contemplating the perfect gifts for family and friends, why not treat yourself to a healthy plan during this holiday season.

All of the activities we are involved in during this holiday season can bring about pain and disfunction. Pain and disfunction will continue. But that doesn’t mean you have to let it run your life or ruin your Christmas. You are made of joints and your joints were made to move! Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard that being sedentary isn’t good for humans. It takes us out of our natural element- movement helps all of our major systems function better. While we are unwilling to neglect the shopping, the food preparation, and the beautiful gift wrapping, we must remember that our spine, the one we were born with that carries us through this Holiday and the next, must not be neglected.

A pain management plan contributes greatly to a healthy life

So, what we’re saying is, don’t let the bustle of the holidays keep you from enjoying your family or missing out on the festivities. Do you have a plan for managing pain and disfunction during busy times? Does an ice pack help? Talking about your struggles with an understanding friend? How about over the counter medication? Medication masks symptoms and does not correct the problem. It may give you temporary pain relief, but the pain will return, and it won’t help correct the problem. Perhaps giving yourself the gift of healthy living. Take care of yourself this Christmas.
